One evening, almost a year later, I was sitting on the porch watching Gail ride her bike in the driveway.

She had just learned how to balance without training wheels.

“Mom!” she shouted happily. “Look!”

She rode straight down the driveway without falling.

I clapped and laughed, feeling something light in my chest for the first time in a long while.

Gail stopped beside me and asked,

“Mom… are you happy now?”

I looked at the sunset, then at my daughter.

And I realized something surprising.

The night my phone buzzed at 2:21 a.m. felt like the worst moment of my life.

But it had actually been the moment everything started getting better.
