“We earned it,” Noah admitted.
“Earned?”
Jake rubbed the back of his neck. “I’ve been mowing lawns.”
Maya nodded. “I walk Mrs. Carter’s dogs.”
Sophie spoke softly. “I help Mrs. Jensen with groceries.”
Noah added, “I babysit for the Collins family.”
Lily said quietly, “I help Mrs. Lewis around the house… and watch her granddaughter.”
She hesitated. “We kept everything in a box in my room… we thought it was the safest place.”
“But you told me you were just out playing,” I said.
Lily lowered her gaze. “We knew you’d say no if we told you.”
She was right.
