The hospital lights were too bright.
Lila had stopped crying by the time we arrived, but that scared me more than the screaming had. She just lay against my chest, exhausted, her small fingers still clutching my shirt.
A nurse rushed us into a room the moment she saw Lila’s skin.
“What happened?” she asked.
I opened my mouth, but the words got stuck in my throat.
“My sister,” I finally said. “She turned the water too hot.”
The nurse’s expression changed instantly. Calm, but serious.
A doctor came in minutes later and examined Lila carefully. He spoke softly to her while checking the red patches along her legs and stomach.
“Good news,” he said after a moment. “They’re superficial burns. Painful, but they should heal.”
Relief crashed over me so suddenly my knees almost gave out.
But then he added something that made my stomach twist.
“Because of the nature of the injury, we have to notify someone.”
“Notify who?” I asked.
